ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

Are you interested in one of our amazing pit bulls????  If your answer is YES, please read the information provided below.

American pit bull terriers (“APBT”) are loving, affection and loyal family companions.  These dogs make you feel like you’re the most important person in their world; and you are to them!!!  Despite all the love, joy and happiness these dogs bring to all who know them, media sensationalism has created public hysteria and an extremely hostile environment for APBTs and their owners.  As a result, public perception is not always positive and APBT owners are often tested by the misinformed public. People who are lucky enough to own these dogs must be prepared to deal with and handle the public in a way that reflects positively on their personal dogs and all other members of the dogs’ breed.  Prior to submitting an online adoption application, please make sure
(i) you are prepared to handle the ever increasing discrimination from the public and (ii) that you satisfy each of the following requirements:

 1.

You are at least 25 years old.

 2.

You are within a reasonable driving distance.  We do not ship dogs.

 3.

You have sufficient and quality time each day to spend with your dog.

 4.

You have considered your future and changes that may occur, such as marriage, moving, losing your job, etc., & are prepared to make a commitment to your dog no matter what the future brings.

5.

You are prepared to deal with the discrimination and you are ready to ensure your dog is well behaved in    public.

6.

You have conducted research from reputable sources regarding the breed and you are prepared to meet the needs of the dog.

7.

You understand that a dog is a LIFETIME COMMITMENT and you are prepared to make the commitment.

Upon determining that you satisfy each of the requirements listed above, please:

 8.

Fill out the online or pdf. application completely and truthfully

 9.

Show solid references and others who can vouch for you.  Three references must be provided! If you own a dog or have owned a dog, you must provide a vet reference.  No relatives please.

After submitting the online application, you will be required to do each of the following things:

10.

Participate in an interview conducted by our Adoption Counselor.

11.

Confirm that everyone in your household also wants and is ready for a dog.

12.

Drive to an agreed upon location to meet the dog in person.

13.

Agree to pre- and post-adoption home-checks.

 14.

Sign a legally binding adoption contract.

 15.

Be prepared to attend obedience classes with your dog.

Note Invisible fencing is not an acceptable form of confinement.

It is crucial that you keep your new dog well trained, well socialized and ALWAYS have him/her on a leash and under your control in public places.  You’ll learn how to talk to more people than you ever thought you would have to about the myths and hysteria surrounding so-called “pit bulls.”  In a sense, you’ll become part PR person, part educator and part dog training expert (if you’re not already, that is!).  By proudly owning and showing off your dog, you’ll be making the world better for APBTs everywhere.

We recognize that these dogs have sadly suffered at the hands of irresponsible breeders and unscrupulous owners.  Some seriously exploited APBTs have shown up on news reports scaring the daylights out of people, convincing many that all APBTs are the devil incarnate.

To counter this hysteria, For the Love of Pits is committed to finding the best dogs and matching them with loving, dedicated and responsible owners.  We look for dogs with rock solid temperaments:  affectionate, wiggly, intelligent and fun.  There is no shortage of these great examples. In fact, Ohio shelters are overflowing with wonderful APBTs, who are automatically sentenced to death.

We handpick for great qualities and place the dogs in home foster care situations for at least ninety (90) days.  In these settings, we learn a lot about the individual dogs and they learn a lot of doggie manners in return.  Our foster dogs are socialized, house-trained, crate trained, microchipped, altered and vaccinated.  Our dogs are tested in many settings, with people, including children, other dogs, on occasion, with cats, and on leash.

Once we know our foster dogs well, and are confident they’re ready for the real world, they are available to the public and advertised on our website and on petfinder.com.

In return for all of the dog screening and home screening, we can both feel confident that the dog you take home is a dog you’re fully prepared to own.  We’ll stay in contact with you for the life of your dog should any questions or concerns come up.

We look forward to hearing from you!

SMOKERS:

Second-hand smoke has been associated with lung and nasal cancer in smokers' dogs.  Because of this negative consequence, we will screen smokers carefully to ensure our dogs' health and longevity.

Thank you for understanding.
